13th February 2023
Tena Koutou e te Whānau o Matipo,
I hope you are all well and safe, looking after yourself, your whānau and loved ones.
After meeting with Te Atatu Principals and our Commissioner – Bruce Adin, the health and safety of our staff and tamariki remain at the forefront of all our decision making.
I have since visited the school site and we have two sizable trees that have been uprooted by the wind. This causes us all concern with the impending cyclone tracking closer to our shoreline with high winds expected. The continuous advice from Auckland Emergency Management is to keep travel to a minimum.
Therefore, with Health and Safety as our key factor to returning staff and tamariki to school safely. We have made the collective decision as Peninsula Principal’s and supported by our respective Presiding Member (Board Chair) to remain closed on Tuesday 14th February.
We expect to open and welcome back the staff and tamariki on Wednesday 15th February, provided there is no flooding damage, damage to the school buildings or obstructions causing safe access concern. Further communication will be sent to our Matipo Whanau tomorrow afternoon (Tuesday 14th February) following a site assessment.
Stay dry, safe and warm.
Kia haumaru kia koutou katoa,
Jonnie Black
Tumuaki – Principal
