Athletics 2012

Last Tuesday, Mr Simpson and Mr Nemaia took our year 5 and 6 athletics finalists to the Trust Stadium for the zone finals. Our pupils competed against the best from eight other schools in the 60m, 100m, 400m, long jump, high jump, shotput and discus. We had a lot to live up to given that we’d won it for the last 3 years in a row. This year we only managed 3rd but that is still a great achievement against eight other schools. All our competitors gave all that they could and made Matipo proud. Stand out achiever though was Jonah Palota-Kopa.

Below are three sets of photos from the Matipo Athletics day.

School Athletics Postponed

Due to the inclement weather conditions, we’re postponing tomorrows School Athletics Day until this Friday. Same time, same place, just Friday instead of Wednesday.

Obviously, this date is also weather dependent.

Soapbox Derby Team

This is our Rotary Club Soapbox Derby team, weighing in our practice car at our first run at the North Shore event.

Cross Country

On Tuesday, the 30 best senior cross country runners from Matipo attended the cluster cross country event at Taipari Strand. Thankfully, the weather turned it on for us. While there were some strong individual performances, we just weren’t strong enough this year, coming 5th overall. Good effort though to all involved and with a bit more time to train next year, we should expect a better result. Special mention to Sydney Magnus who came 3rd in the year 5 girls.

Below is a full gallery from the Matipo Cross Country last Thursday.

US RWC Team, Ex Pupil Roland Suniula Visit

Roland Suniula, the 1st five-eighth for the United States Rugby World Cup team, returned to his old school, Matipo Primary for a visit in the last week of term 3.

His brother Andrew was also in the team but had to return directly to the US. Both players, plus younger brother Shalom are also in the US Sevens team. Andrew also had a season playing league for the Manly Sea Eagles. All six of the Suniula children (5 brother and one sister) went to Matipo Primary and all excelled in sport.

Although born in American Samoa, the boys all followed the same schooling pathway; Matipo Primary, Te Atatu Intermediate and Kelston Boys High School.

An excited assembly saw Roland pay tribute to his old school and present his first rugby coach principal Wayne Bainbridge with a signed US team jersey.

Matipo Diamonds

The Matipo Diamonds netball team, a mixture of Year 1 & 2 girls recieved a special cup and individual medals for the Best Uniform in the Year 2 group. Mrs Oto also recieved a voucher and letter of recognition for being an enthusiastic coach.

Basketball Field Day

On Thursday 9 July Matipo took a team of ten year 5 and 6 students to the inter-school basketball field day at the Trusts Stadium. The team played six brilliant games and won all of them. Overall the team won the B grade competition. Player of the day was Isaiah Vagana.
