For the last six months or so we’ve been working hard to cater physically for our rapidly growing roll, and the first results of this are the new relocatable rooms, Room 20 and 21 that arrived over the holidays, just in time for the start of Term 1 2013. Because all of our growth over the last few decades has been catered for with relocatable rooms, this means we have lost more and more green field space, with Room 20 and 21 encroaching slightly on the top field, cutting off a chunk of the in-goal area of our rugby field.
While we’re better off in this respect than some schools in Auckland are, in that we have a wide area of wonderful, park-like grounds, this trend cannot continue. So we’re pleased to announce that behind-the-scenes work has been progressing well on a new double-story permanent classroom block. We’re aiming for construction to start in the last quarter of 2013 and hoping to have the rooms ready to move into for Term 1 2014. This will be the biggest and most expensive building project Matipo has embarked upon since initial construction of the school in 1963-64, with a budget coming in around the million dollar mark.
While we’re still in the early stages, we have some 3D renders of the proposed building. This will be constructed in the space between Room 16 and Room 18, with the stairs of the new building facing out to the Junior courts. The sandpit and existing single playground structure will be relocated. The block will consist of two classrooms up and two down, with a shared workspace/foyer area in between, a teacher workspace, and an accessible elevator.
