Spring is here and everything is starting to grow! How about starting your own compost bin at home and get your kids to start composting green waste and household fruit and vege peelings? Just nail together three wooden Pallets to make an upright U shape, you can pick these up for free almost any day on Rosebank Road, the businesses put them out on the roadside. Add grass clippings and brown leaves or newspaper to keep from smelling, and turn every so often for best results.

27th October 2011 NEWSLETTER NO 32
This week I reported to the Board of Trustees on progress in Term 3. We started with a great ERO report putting us in the top 15-18% of all schools in New Zealand. We had the excellent school production, Room 13 completed a wonderful music project with the Auckland Art Gallery and the Auckland Philharmonia Orchestra. We had a marvellous end-of-term assembly with Roland Suniula from the United States Rugby World Cup team and of course our World Cup Opening Ceremony with Mr Ludbrook’s video now seen by 900+ viewers worldwide. The new classroom has been completed on time and over the holidays the Art Suite was re-carpeted and junior courts re-laid. We had a $94000 electrical upgrade and the $15000 Book Flood generously donated by Akzo Nobel and the Waitakere Licencing Trust.
Some might say we achieved as much in a term as many schools would make in a year (or more). Then again, some would say we show off!
WARM WELCOME THIS WEEK TO
Junior Taufia, Lesi-Ann Taufia, Jackson Taufia, Israel Walters, Xtyrling Walters, Georgina O’Neill, Nikita Mereyato, Te Arepa Taiaroa and Charlie White, we wish you all a long and enjoyable time with us here at Matipo Primary.
HAPPY BIRTHDAY THIS WEEK TO
Dallas Edmonds, Sandy Malua, Blake Travers, Scarlett Kearns McOnie, Victory Boznanski, Kieran Archer, Taran Robson, Charlie White, and a belated happy birthday to Nikita Mereyato, Xtyrling Walters and Te Arepa Taiaroa.
ASSEMBLY CLASS
This week is Room 14, for Friday 28 October.
MATHATHON
Later in the term we are having our major fundraiser, this year a Math-a-thon. As you know (and especially if you have experience of other schools), we do very little fundraising. Although the Mathathon does have a learning component to it, it is primarily a fundraiser. This year the proceeds will go towards buying iPads for the children. These are the future and we must equip our kids with the tools for the future. All children taking part will go into a lucky prize draw.
WE WOULD LOVE TO HEARD FROM ANY PARENTS WHO HAVE CONTACTS WHO COULD DONATE PRIZES FOR THE PRIZE DRAW
PURCHASED
Baby Grand Piano for Hall.
COMPLETED
New Classroom Room 19, being taken by Mrs Jan Clark as a 4th New Entrant Class
TE ATATU INTERMEDIATE YEAR 6 TESTING
Has been changed to Monday 14th November 9.30-12.00.
TERM DATES
Wed 2 November – Class Photos
Thurs 3 November – Cross Country 1:30 pm
Tues 8 November – Zone Cross Country

Tues 22 November – Cricket Field Day
Thursday 15 November – Reports home
Friday 16 December – Fun Day
Mon 19 December – Prizegiving / Year 6 Graduation
Tuesday 20 December – Term ends
SCHOOL DEVELOPMENT
At the moment, the staff are involved in a school stocktake, looking at all aspects of the school and reviewing what we do and what we could perhaps do. Our arts strand is very well established but I would like to strengthen our science and technology. I would also like us to develop an Asian Awareness as Asia is rapidly becoming our major trade and cultural partner.
In regard to this topic of school development I would far rather engage with parents – seek your input rather than hear that a teacher only smiled 3.75 times per hour! We have an excellent school here and I am seeking to make it even more excellent.
CLASS PHOTOS
Envelopes have been sent home today – class photos are next Wednesday 2nd November, please return money and envelopes ASAP.
PROFESSIONAL REVIEW OF “GIANTS FROM OUTER SPACE”
By Geoff Spedding ex Radio NZ & Taranaki Daily News
“The show was written by one of the teachers who is a published author of science fiction books for young people. It was directed by another literary teacher and took the form of what can only be described as a ‘Rock Opera’.
It was loud, colourful and full of wild dancing with lots of arm-waving and jumping around. The singing was great as the performers, who couldn’t have been more than 10 years old, put everything they had into what they did. The songs were, fortunately for deaf old me, displayed on a screen at the right back of the stage and I’m sure that after having learned them the children would know forever the names of the planets in order, the physics and chemistry of the sun’s radiation and the colours of the rainbow, amongst a lot of other interesting stuff.
Scene changes were quick and the lighting was colourful and bright with a smoke machine adding to the atmosphere, both on and off the stage. I had a great time even though I found the story line hard to follow at times. But then I’m deaf. There were some hilarious one-liners which I wasn’t too deaf to hear, and the frenetic musicality and dancing and total commitment of the cast to the job in hand made up for any little discrepancies there may have been. One hears about “feel-good” shows. This was one of them. I’m so glad I was able to be there to see what can be done by young performers when they are really enjoying themselves.”

UNSUPERVISED CHILDREN
I have had a couple of calls recently from “Concerned Neighbours” about children going home to empty houses and being unsupervised after school. New Zealand law is quite clear – children under 14 cannot be left alone and unsupervised and you must be 14 or over to babysit younger children. If your child is going home to an empty house after school, then I suggest you arrange some care provisions for them.

We received this week our unconfirmed Education Review Office report. It was an outstanding report with no issues or requirements. Schools can get three sorts of ERO reports which relate to how long before they come back. We got a 4-5 year re-visit classification which is the top one you can get, limited to just 20% of schools. They speak of high standards, future focused learning, innovative strategies, positive relationships, good classroom environments, students achieving well, forward-thinking, well informed and strategic leadership.
This was a magnificent result and reflects well on leadership, staff, Board and children.

TRANSPORT BY PARENT CAR
A query has been received from a parent about safety issues when transporting children on school trips. Drivers need to have a full license and their car should be safe, registered and with a current warrant of fitness. All children must wear a seat belt and children under 8 cannot occupy the front seat.

RUGBY FIELD DAY

GARDENING GROUP/TE ATATU CHRISTMAS PARADE
I put a notice in last week’s newsletter requesting volunteers for both these tasks. Unfortunately I only got 5 replies. Ever the optimist I am again asking for the names of volunteers to assist in the planting out of the garden beds and in helping with the Te Atatu Christmas Parade float. If there is no further response, we will simply scrap our plans and not proceed with either.

WARM WELCOME THIS WEEK TO

HAPPY BIRTHDAY THIS WEEK TO
Fiston Iradukunda, Ryan McDonald, Manaia McMath, Indi Bell, Hannah Whyte, Casey Nayler, Amanda Lowe, Nathaniel Heenan, Donna Jamieson and Johnny Rockel.
FRIDAY ASSEMBLY
This Friday’s assembly will be hosted by Room 9, 2:15 pm in the Hall. All welcome.
STRANGER DANGER
Last week we had what we thought was an attempt to lure one of our pupils into a car. Upon investigation and by very skillful questioning by Constable Siaki, it turned out to be a false alarm. A motorist misinterpreted some play fighting on the way home and stopped to offer assistance to who they thought was the “Victim” and offered a child a lift home to get him away from the ‘trouble’.
None the less, it was an important reminder to us all about child safety and stranger danger.
PARENT POWER
Shelley Boyack is presenting a petition at the local Council Board Meeting next Thursday night. The petition is on the counter at the school office. She is asking for a footpath through Te Atatu Park from Neil Ave to Matipo Road. This would encourage walking rather than a car trip. Children would arrive at school with dry shoes, it would reduce gate chaos and bike danger on the road route and contribute to the council’s path network.
PARENT INTERVIEWS
Thank you to those who attended. The turn out was about 67%.
TERM DATES FOR 2012
Term 1 Tuesday 7 February – Thursday 5 April
Term 2 Monday 23 April – Friday 29 June
Term 3 Monday 16 July – Friday 28 September
Term 4 Monday 15 October – Thursday 20 December
SPEEDING ALONG MATIPO ROAD
The Speed Limit outside our school is 40 km per hour – please watch your speed school particularly in the busy morning and afternoon drop off and collection times. Excessive speeding will be referred direct to the Police. Also, people are double parking in the carpark opposite the school, u-turning and backing with speed – please do not do this for obvious reasons.
Thank you so much to all our helpers – the weather has been very cold and often wet lately and we are very grateful to those who give their time to ensure our children a safe trip home. A special thanks to Dean Trifilo who has helped us all year. Thank you, we are very grateful.
PUPIL REPORTS
The interim report form that most of you got is the report form designated by the government and Education Minister, Anne Tolley. It is the prescribed format – it is not “our” form.
GARDEN BEDS
A parent suggested a couple of garden beds (for flowers) would be a nice addition to the school. These have subsequently been dug. Volunteers are now sought to do the planting and/or donate some clippings or plants. It is suggested that each garden could have a cultural theme, eg a Pacific garden, or maybe an English garden. A working bee on a Saturday morning (tbc) is suggested. Anyone wishing to be involved in any way on this project should send your name and phone number to the office by phone
(834 6909), email (principal@matipo.school.nz) or by reply slip.
TE ATATU CHRISTMAS PARADE
A very early call for any volunteers for our float for the Te Atatu Christmas Parade – see reply slip below.

Mrs Siaki goes on leave tomorrow for 7 weeks as she and her husband Faga are adopting a baby girl (Kiana). Congratulations and best wishes to Leanne and Faga and welcome to Amy Huizing who will relieve in Room 10 while Mrs Siaki is away.
