Veteran Car Day

On the last day of term we held a Veteran Car Day – a follow up to earlier Holden & Ford days held in the last few years.

We had a very exciting line up of cars – three Ford Mustangs, a Rolls Royce Silver Shadow, three midget race cars, a 1929 Ford roadster powered by a Lincoln V12, two Morris Minors, a Morris Oxford wagone and two 1950 Bradfords along with a few vintage lawnmowers, plus a 1959 Ford Customline and a Ford Zephyr 6 MkIII.

The children greatly enjoyed the cars running and were able to sit in the midgets.

Speech Contest

On Friday was the Matipo School Speech Contest. The competition was for our Year 3 to 6 students. The school final was judged by Brad Cross the manager of the ASB bank in Te Atatu and one of his assistant managers Tracy. He commented on the high quality of speeches this year. Congratulations to our winners!

Matariki 2010

Last week Matipo School celebrated Matariki. Each winter the stars of Matariki and Puanga signal the end of one year in Aotearoa and the beginning of the next. Traditionally Maori have recognised the rise of Matariki as a time to celebrate and prepare for the indigenous New Year.

In class we learnt about Matariki through a range of activities including Maths, Reading Journal Articles, Myths and Art, and Room 9 had a planting day.

The Matariki celebrations were concluded with a fabulous Hangi. Thanks to all our volunteers who helped it be a huge success!

Intermediate Visit

Today the Year 6’s visited Te Atatu Intermediate. It was an opportunity for the children to spend some time in the Technology Rooms. The children were divided into 6 groups and went to a Tech Room to either do Science, Visual Arts, Workshop, Soft Materials, Hard Materials and Food Technology. They thoroughly enjoyed their visit!

Pasifika Parents Night

Last Week we had a Pasifika Parents Night. We were totally overwhelmed and pleased by the huge number of Parents and Children that attended the evening. Thank Miss Oto and the Polynesian Group for performing their items for us.And a big Thank you for all the positive feedback from the night!

A very worthwhile evening and we look forward to having another next term!

Samoan Language Week

Last week Matipo focussed on Samoan Language in preparation for this Weeks Samoan Language Week.

Many classes used this time to practise Samoan Language in the classroom, investigate Samoa and its culture and also to do various styles of Samoan Art. MTV used this time to teach us new words each day!

We finished the week off with the Samoan Language Group taking Friday’s Assembly. This was an opportunity to showcase what each class had been doing throughout the week.

What an amazing assembly!

Auckland Philharmonia Orchestra Brass

Today the Auckland Philharmonia Orchestra Brass Section came to visit us.

Each person told us all about their instrument and showed us different ways of playing their instrument.

One of our favourite parts was when we found out how long each instrument was. The tuba was the longest!

Debate Contest

For the last few weeks the Senior School has been having a Debating Competition. We had a round robin competition where each class competed against the other 2 Senior Classes on various topics.

Today Room 10 and Room 11 competed in the Syndicate Final with the proposition TV is better than books. Congratulations to Room 11 who were the overall champions.

Mad Dress Up Day

Today the School Councillors organised Mad Dress Up Day. It was a Gold Coin to enter the competition and the money raised went to our World Vision Sponsor.

There were many prizes for costumes, including the wackiest, the most colourful and the costume most like a famous character.

The children looked fabulous!

House Treat

On Tuesday Tahwiri House had their House Treat to celebrate their win in Term 1. They had a Bouncy Castle come, which was great fun! They also had a DVD going in the Media Room and strategic games to play outside! The children enjoyed their afternoon.
