Christmas on the Green – CANCELLED

Due to the predicted on-going bad weather, we have decided to cancel Thursday’s Christmas on the Green. Instead we will have a modified concert at 1.40pm in the hall, with limited seating.

First in, best seated!

Could any children with Santa hats please wear them.

Salsa Workshop

Heidi Hughes from the Jambalaya Festival arranged a Salsa dance workshop from a world champion Columbian dance couple. The children really loved this show – well the girls more than the boys!

Cross Country

On Tuesday, the 30 best senior cross country runners from Matipo attended the cluster cross country event at Taipari Strand. Thankfully, the weather turned it on for us. While there were some strong individual performances, we just weren’t strong enough this year, coming 5th overall. Good effort though to all involved and with a bit more time to train next year, we should expect a better result. Special mention to Sydney Magnus who came 3rd in the year 5 girls.

Matipo Book Flood

Children at Matipo Primary School were very excited to take home free books thanks to the support of Akzo Nobel and the Waitakere Licensing Trust. The two organisations provided $15,000 worth of books as part of the ‘Matipo Book Flood’ project.

Principal Wayne Bainbridge says the idea for the project came when a reading support teacher aide approached him for books for children who had none at home.

“It used to be that kids got books as part of their birthday and Christmas presents but it doesn’t seem to happen anymore” said Mr Bainbridge.

The school initially had a second hand book drive to collect books to distribute. The idea then grew after discussion with Kevin O’Flaherty, manager of Akzo Nobel, a local paint and industrial coatings company.

“We are part of an international company with a strong social responsibility commitment” said Mr O’Flaherty. “We have supported Matipo School over the last three years and are delighted how our partnership has grown,” he said.

The school also applied to the Waitakere Licensing Trust for support.

“We are tremendously grateful for the ongoing support of the Trust” said Mr Bainbridge. “Lots of people moan about the Trust and want supermarket sales. However in the Waitakere community, the Trust doesn’t just make a difference, it is the difference, said Mr Bainbridge.

Giants From Outer Space Dress Rehearsal Sneak Peek

Friday saw the first full dress rehearsal for this years school production, Giants From Outer Space. This year the production is entirely in-house, with it being written by Mr Simpson and produced by Mr Webster. Contact the office for tickets, they’re selling fast!

Matipo RWC Opening Ceremony

Friday 9 September saw the entire school get into the spirit of the opening Rugby World Cup with their very own special celebration. It was wonderful to see so many parents and grandparents turn up to support our Matipo whanau. All of the classes went to a lot of effort to show their team colours. The children did us proud as they sang the National Anthem, listened to Mr Bainbridge officially ‘open’ the RWC 2011, sang a waiata and then the boys performed their rousing haka. To cap off the proceedings Lennox from Room 17 did a fantastic job of kicking the rugby ball to start the ‘game’! Let the RWCbegin!

Young Writers and Illustrators Seminar

Four students from Matipo attended the Auckland Reading Association’s Young Authors and Illustrators Seminar held at Hay Park School on Friday 19^th August.

Grace Muller, Jason Xavier, Lovina de Silva and Margaret Lowe attended two workshops with The Wonky Donkey author Craig Smith and illustrator Katz Cowley. Both workshops encouraged and taught children how to write and illustrate their own stories.

All four reported they thoroughly enjoyed the experience and will be using the tips they learnt from both Craig Smith and Katz Cowley in their own writng.

Matariki Week

Last week Matipo School celebrated Matariki. In class we learnt about Matariki through a range of activities including Maths, Reading Journal Articles, Myths and Art. The Matariki celebrations were concluded with a fabulous Hangi. Thanks to all our volunteers who helped it be a huge success in dreadful weather!

Mick Peck, Magician

We had the great pleasure of having Mick Peck, Magician, come and perform for us on Wednesday 11th May. He came and told us about the magic of reading and how if we love reading then we can become anything we want to be when we grow up. Mick is a very talented magician (we don’t know how he did a lot of his tricks!).
