Science in a Van
The middle and senior school really enjoyed a science show from the team at Science in a Van, using liquid nitrogen. This was provided free by the school.

Young Writers and Illustrators Seminar
With the author and illustrator of The Wonky Donkey.
Four students from Matipo attended the Auckland Reading Association’s Young Authors and Illustrators Seminar held at Hay Park School on Friday 19th August.
Grace Muller, Jason Xavier, Lovina de Silva and Margaret Lowe attended two workshops with The Wonky Donkey author Craig Smith and illustrator Katz Cowley. Both workshops encouraged and taught children how to write and illustrate their own stories.
All four reported they thoroughly enjoyed the experience and will be using the tips they learnt from both Craig Smith and Katz Cowley in their own writng.
Poetry Competition
Last Friday we had our School Poetry Competition. Mrs Noelle Fletcher, the Principal from Te Atatu Intermediate School, judged the competition for us. Congratulations to the following winners:

Spelling Bee
The School Spelling Bee was for Year 3-6. CONGRATULATIONS to Lovina de Silva of Room 9 and Olivia Gwiazdzinski of Room 11 for winning the Middle and Senior school Spelling Bee. Thanks also to Mr Simpson for organizing it.
Mandarin Lessons
The Senior School are lucky enough to be learning Mandarin for the next 10 weeks. This is provided by the University of Auckland and Confucius Institute.
The children love Jessica Tan and her enthusiasm for teaching the language.
Speech Contest
On Friday was the Matipo School Speech Contest. The competition was for our Year 3 to 6 students. The school final was judged by Brad Cross the manager of the ASB bank in Te Atatu and one of his assistant managers Tracy. He commented on the high quality of speeches this year. Congratulations to our winners!
