23RD FEBRUARY 2012
School continues to hum along with children well settled, special programmes underway, after school classes started and a general positive feel round the school. We appreciate the positive commitment we get from parents and thanks to those who came to the Meet the Teacher evening last night. I would like to apologise to Mrs McCrory for the mis-spelling of her name in an earlier newsletter. As always, if you have any issues or concerns please see the teacher promptly.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY THIS WEEK TO
Lachlan McGill, Mereana Mua, Luke Winther, Maatika Heketoa and Jared McCarthy.

WARM WELCOME THIS WEEK TO

CONGRATULATIONS
To Jonah Palota-Kopa who represented Auckland in the Trans-Tasman athletic team winning gold in the discus, and silver in the shot put. Well done Jonah!

SCHOOL DONATION
As you know, school donation is voluntary, tax deductible, puts you into the Lucky Prize Draw for a Sharp music system donated by school sponsor SHARP ELECTRONICS. If on the 1st December you are unhappy with any aspect of our school performance, simply ask for your money back, no questions asked!

WALKING SCHOOL BUS
We had a walking school bus a few years ago but it lapsed for lack of volunteers. The concept has been suggested again and we are seeking support from parents who can commit to a Walking School Bus from the Westpac Bank up at the shopping centre, down Taikata Road to school departing Westpac at 8.15am & departing school at 3.10pm. We need 2 parents per trip – a ‘driver’ and a ‘conductor’. Please return the reply slip if you are interested.

WARDENS
Seeking parents able to assist our wardens at the corner of Matipo & Taikata Rds mornings and/or afternoons on the following days: Wednesday & Thursday.

Dear Parents & Caregivers,

At the beginning of Week 3, school has started incredibly quietly and smoothly. All classes are well established, vibrant room environments being developed, special needs programmes underway and after school classes beginning this week.

Over the holidays we had some drainage work undertaken and painting of the boiler house and back of the Parent Centre. We had a break in and school keys stolen from the caretaker’s room. A new key system has been installed and movement activated sensor cameras installed. The grounds are being brought under control and one of our parents (Peter Boyack) kindly chopped out three dead trees on the drive way.

We have had a great response to the school donations with nearly $10,000 received. The school donation is voluntary, tax deductible and puts you in the lucky draw for a SHARP Sound System drawn at the end of Term 1.

Meet the teacher is on this Wednesday 22nd between 2-8pm. Most afterschool classes have started and in Term 2 a repeat of the cooking class and a photography class will be offered. We enter our 16th year as the original school to partner with the Auckland Philharmonic Orchestra and we will have two visiting small groups visit the school and an opportunity for 45 children to go to the Aotea Centre for a concert by the full orchestra.

The education section has a very capable new minister, Hon Hekia Parata who has an excellent background in education, comes from an amazing successful family, is intelligent and is ranked 7th in the Cabinet. The government has already signalled a tough bargaining round for the teacher contract talks, fiscal restraint, changes to the employment conditions of principals and possible changes to class sizes (upwards).

Our school roll situation is well known to you all. It is probable that we will get extra staffing resources and a medium term solution is to convert the computer room into a classroom (not this year). However, the current closed roll situation does reinforce that if you have pre-schoolers starting here over the next 3-4 years, you should pre-enrol them now.

I hope the year has started well for you and that in the year of the Dragon, you have a positive, happy and safe year. If you have any problems or queries, please do not hesitate to see the teacher first, and then the syndicate leader or me.

Very best wishes,

Wayne Bainbridge

Welcome back to the 2012 school year. It was a wet, rainy holiday but we are looking forward to a positive, sunny, successful year. The school roll is very high, opening at 395 pupils.

Welcome back to the 2012 school year. Great to see all our smiling faces back.

Last year was a huge year for the school with the Book Flood, the Show, a new room, introduction of I pads and the fantastic ERO report. This year we welcome four new, highly qualified teachers: Ray Chen, Persia Iwan, Ellyce Martin, Nicole Wilson and Maggie McCrory becoming a permanent full time teacher.

Finally, can I again reiterate these important steps for a child’s success at school:
• Regular attendance
• Parental interest
• Regular homework
• Good health and nutrition
• Good sleep patterns

Younger children should be in bed by 7.00pm, Middle School children by 8.00pm and Senior School children by 9.00pm.

Best wishes for a good year.

Some Reminders:
• Please name clothing and possessions.
• Could exercise books please be covered.
• Please don’t come into the school grounds in vehicles before or after school.
• If you have a concern, see the teacher as soon as possible.
• If you have a complaint, after you have seen the teacher, address it to the Syndicate Leader, then the Principal, then the Board of Trustees. For serious complaints, go directly to the Principal.
• All children have some form of homework. Please take an interest in this and follow up with your child.
• Please try and be supportive of the teacher and the school in your child’s hearing. Any negative attitude is usually picked up on by children.
• Help foster your child’s independence. From Year 2 and above the children are quite capable of walking themselves to their rooms and unpacking their own bags and tidying their own desks.
• The newsletter comes home on THURSDAYS. It is our main form of communication so please look for it.

Stationery Packs
$18.00 for New Entrants, $16.00 Juniors and $17.00 for Middle and Senior

Bikes
Only children in Year 4 and above may ride bikes to school. They must wear a helmet and must walk the bike within the school grounds.

Hats
In Terms I & IV, children must wear hats in the playground at morning interval and lunchtime.
