Cross Country
On Tuesday, the 30 best senior cross country runners from Matipo attended the cluster cross country event at Taipari Strand. Thankfully, the weather turned it on for us. While there were some strong individual performances, we just weren’t strong enough this year, coming 5th overall. Good effort though to all involved and with a bit more time to train next year, we should expect a better result. Special mention to Sydney Magnus who came 3rd in the year 5 girls.
Below is a full gallery from the Matipo Cross Country last Thursday.
US RWC Team, Ex Pupil Roland Suniula Visit
Roland Suniula, the 1st five-eighth for the United States Rugby World Cup team, returned to his old school, Matipo Primary for a visit in the last week of term 3.
His brother Andrew was also in the team but had to return directly to the US. Both players, plus younger brother Shalom are also in the US Sevens team. Andrew also had a season playing league for the Manly Sea Eagles. All six of the Suniula children (5 brother and one sister) went to Matipo Primary and all excelled in sport.
Although born in American Samoa, the boys all followed the same schooling pathway; Matipo Primary, Te Atatu Intermediate and Kelston Boys High School.
An excited assembly saw Roland pay tribute to his old school and present his first rugby coach principal Wayne Bainbridge with a signed US team jersey.
Matipo RWC Opening Ceremony
Friday 9 September saw the entire school get into the spirit of the opening Rugby World Cup with their very own special celebration. It was wonderful to see so many parents and grandparents turn up to support our Matipo whanau. All of the classes went to a lot of effort to show their team colours. The children did us proud as they sang the National Anthem, listened to Mr Bainbridge officially ‘open’ the RWC 2011, sang a waiata and then the boys performed their rousing haka. To cap off the proceedings Lennox from Room 17 did a fantastic job of kicking the rugby ball to start the ‘game’! Let the RWCbegin!

The Matipo Diamonds netball team, a mixture of Year 1 & 2 girls recieved a special cup and individual medals for the Best Uniform in the Year 2 group. Mrs Oto also recieved a voucher and letter of recognition for being an enthusiastic coach.

On Thursday 9 July Matipo took a team of ten year 5 and 6 students to the inter-school basketball field day at the Trusts Stadium. The team played six brilliant games and won all of them. Overall the team won the B grade competition. Player of the day was Isaiah Vagana.
Bluebeard Day
Tuesday, 12 April was Bluebeard Day at the Auckland Blues’ training ground, Unitec.
A mixed group of boys and girls from Years 5 and 6 were invited to join the entire Blues squad. What a great day. First all the Blues were introduced by Pat Lamb, the Blues coach, then we had a fun relay, tackling a bag, running zigzags, passing, getting past a Blue and scoring a try. We came second in the primary schools.
We then went with some Pro Sport, and Blues for some great activities. Running, passing, star jumps, and heaps more.
The day ended with everyone getting a pack with a free pass, chocolate bar, stickers, Blues postcard, and a huge poster.
Then to the luxurious bus we were given free back to school after a tiring but awesome day.

The A Team beat Freyberg, Peninsula, and Glendene and were only beaten by an excellent Flanshaw side who went on to win the competition. The B Team got all the way to the B final and came within 4 runs of winning – Matthew Oxenham almost took a winning catch on an impossible ball on the penultimate delivery, couldn’t quite hold it. The B Team were the runners up on the day
