Newsletter #20

Ofiu Latu, Bronte Murray and Corban Murray, we wish you a long and enjoyable time here at Matipo Primary.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY THIS WEEK TO
Ofiu Latu, Liam Woulfe, Mason Whiu, Sydney Magnus, Mia Curreen-Poko, Fynn Petterson-O’Reilly, Hannah Lovrich,
Riahn Whenuaroa and Xanthe Taurua.

FRIDAY ASSEMBLY
This week will be hosted by Room 6 at 2:15 pm in the Hall. All welcome.

IS IT JUST ME
Or has it been bitterly cold lately! I see children in bare feet and tee-shirts and it makes me shiver just to look. I know you send your kids to school well prepared for the weather but we need a combined campaign to get them to keep their clothes on!

ATTENDANCE
A hugely important factor in school success for children is having them attend school every single day. This week letters have gone home to parents whose children have been away for more than 5 days in the term – this is 10% of the term and is the same benchmark for all West Auckland schools. Often parents don’t realize that a day here and a couple of days there quickly mounts up.

PARKING
Neighbours in Crieff Place have complained to the school about people parking over their driveways. As previously explained, this is not an area of school responsibility, rather Auckland city traffic wardens but we are giving you a heads up that a complaint has been made.

HIP HOP DANCE CLASS TERM 3
There are some spaces left if you would like to join the hiphop class starting in Rerm 3. The class is on Monday’s after school for an hour. It costs $20 per term. Register your interest at the office or with Mrs Fotheringhame before Friday 15th July.

WEST FONO HEALTH TRUST
FREE Dance Fitness Class – Pacific Island, Latin & Zumba Music, low impact. Te Atatu Peninsula Community Centre every Tuesday 6-7 pm. For more information please contact Heather on 832 5815 or 021 0714520 or West Fono on 837 1780.

KIDS SCHOOL HOLIDAY MUSIC CAMP – Te Atatu Peninsula.
For 6-7 year olds. Tuesday 26th July – Friday 29th July. 9 – 12 pm daily
$ 75.00 per child for the course. Piano, kit drumming, ukulele, percussion
Kids need to have been learning one of these instruments for at least one year unless choosing Ukulele, which will be taught at beginner level. Kids will try all of the others during the camp at an introductory level. Focus on fun, includes other activities. Please email if interested including child’s main instrument, name and age to, heidi@jambalaya.co.nz. Course will only run if we have five kids for each instrument.

Do you have a harmonious functioning stepfamily?
(Well, at least most of the time!) Are you a stepparent or stepchild between 9 – 17 years old who thinks they have a healthy positive step relationship?
Have you been in this step relationship for about 2 years or more?
If so, we would really like you and your family to take part in research. The purpose of this research is to explore how regular stepfamilies manage to achieve fairness in everyday life.
Your participation would provide us with information that will be valuable for new and other step families who are still struggling to build up this type of relationship. All that is involved is one household family meeting and filling out some questions (approx 45 minutes) If this sounds interesting please contact Celia Falchi 0274 460 732 or families@ihug.co.nz for more information. In appreciation for your time, you will receive a $100 supermarket voucher or family movie vouchers.
This research is supported by the New Zealand Families Commission.

Newsletter #19

30th June 2011 NEWSLETTER NO: 19
Oratia School hit the news with 17 confirmed cases of measles. They had 70 unimmunised children who all had to stay home for 2 weeks to ensure the measles didn’t spread. Some parents refused, the school then had to suspend the children and ended up on TV3 and in the papers.
We had one potential case which turned out not to be measles thank goodness. However, we have 21 unimmunised children. You don’t have to be immunised but in the event of a communicable disease outbreak, they too would have to stay home.

VALUE OF THE WEEK
Mana – having pride, dignity and values.

BIRTH CERTIFICATES
We have had a recent spate of enrolments that didn’t have proof of birth, eg birth certificate or passport. It is a requirement of New Zealand law that all birth dates are verified and we are still awaiting some outstanding birth certificates to be presented.

YOGHURT
Some parents wonder why kids can’t have yoghurt or dairy food as it is a healthy option. Yes it is, but when it gets dropped on the carpet it becomes a stinky option requiring that part of the classroom carpet be shampooed to get the yoghurt completely out and the smell removed (when it goes off). Thanks for your co-operation in this matter.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY THIS WEEK TO
Hannah Gavin, Madison Astridge, Kayla Holmes and Danica Jones.

THE MUSIC EDUCATION CENTRE
1. The Music Education Centre students learning keyboard/piano and guitar at school are all doing really well. At the start of term 3, most of these students will be getting a special Musical Progress Report mailed home from their MEC instrumental teacher.
2. All families are invited to attend the Music Education Centre’s Performance Afternoons. The next performance will be on Sunday 10th July at 1 p.m. at the Tirimoana School Hall (Kokiri Street). Come and see what some West Auckland children are doing with their music. This event happens every term and is free to attend.
3. For information or to enrol in keyboard/piano or guitar lessons at school, contact the MEC on 0800893939.

NEWSLETTER NO: 13

Last week I was an invitee to the Auckland Education Summit held at the Auckland Museum.  160 attended of whom 22 were principals. One of the topics was school accountability to parents and the community. I think it is an area our school could do better in.
We account to our community by twice yearly children’s reports and also reporting to the Board of Trustees who represent the community.
We provide opportunities for parents to participate with the school through various events and also have periodic consultations.
However, I think we need to have some way of having more dialogue together and I would like to see the Learning Expos strengthened from the school end, so that each child is able to talk about their learning outcomes for the term – it is not just about kids showing their parents their books.

FEEDBACK
1. From a grandparent phoning the school at lunchtime and passing on feedback how impressed he was with the telephone manner of one of our pupil secretaries, Tayla-Lee Room 13.
2. From James Gracewood-Easther, a visiting pupil from the US;
“Your school is the best school I have ever been to”.
3. From the mother of two Christchurch “refugee” children; “I would like to thank you for everything you have all done for Michael and Isobel. What was a horrible situation for the children was turned into an amazing experience for both of them. Both children have requested that we move to Auckland as they had such a wonderful time at Matipo School. I think that most of that is due to the wonderful support they received from the staff and the students at your school.”

POETRY COMPETITION
We had a great annual poetry competition which was very well and very graciously judged by Mrs Noelle Fletcher, Principal of Te Atatu Intermediate School. Congratulations to the winners:

Year 1 Amber Ball Room 6
Year 2 Gaea Morrison Room 6
Year 3 Aidan Ripley Room 9

Year 5 Sydney Magnus Room 10
