Veteran Car Day

On the last day of term we held a Veteran Car Day – a follow up to earlier Holden & Ford days held in the last few years.

We had a very exciting line up of cars – three Ford Mustangs, a Rolls Royce Silver Shadow, three midget race cars, a 1929 Ford roadster powered by a Lincoln V12, two Morris Minors, a Morris Oxford wagone and two 1950 Bradfords along with a few vintage lawnmowers, plus a 1959 Ford Customline and a Ford Zephyr 6 MkIII.

The children greatly enjoyed the cars running and were able to sit in the midgets.

Speech Contest

On Friday was the Matipo School Speech Contest. The competition was for our Year 3 to 6 students. The school final was judged by Brad Cross the manager of the ASB bank in Te Atatu and one of his assistant managers Tracy. He commented on the high quality of speeches this year. Congratulations to our winners!

Mike Allsop Everest Climber

Mike Allsop, who is an Air New Zealand pilot, visited our school to talk about his climb to the top of Mt Everest.

It cost him $50,000 for his share of the costs. He gave us the link to his photo gallery.

Room 10 Goes Planting For Trees for Survival

On Wednesday 16 June 2010, Room 10 went planting on a farm in Waitoki. The owner of the farm is Phil. It took ages, like a century to get there. Our driver was Graham who is in Rotary and also helps us plant. Finally we were there.

We went up the hill to a huge barn for morning tea. There were brownies, orange juice and tea for the adults. We sat on the steps in the barn. There were 2 dogs, a Labrador and a Great Dane.

After morning tea we had a play and then we hopped back onto the bus to go where we were going to plant our plants. Gail from the ARC showed us how to use the camping toilet and how to dig a hole and plant a plant. Kate also from the ARC was with her.

We had nine very helpful parents with us, they were, Gina, Donna, Grant, Tamati, Michael, Kylie, Shane, Chris, and Brenda. What an awesome group they were.

We started planting. First you dig the hole, make sure it is deep enough, plant the plant, place a blue fertiliser tablet next to it, firm the soil around it and do the pukeko test. That is you give it a tug to make sure pesky pukekos can’t pull them out. We had to put a blue tablet in with the plant so it could grow more easily. 550 plants later we completed the task.

Then we had delicious pizza, soup and more brownies for lunch. Then all of room 10 jumped over all of the horse jumps. It was a really cool day but then unfortunately we had to leave.

We come home tired, but very satisfied with our efforts. We really enjoyed the planting and year fives can go again next year. My favourite bit was lunch and the planting.

Matariki 2010

Last week Matipo School celebrated Matariki. Each winter the stars of Matariki and Puanga signal the end of one year in Aotearoa and the beginning of the next. Traditionally Maori have recognised the rise of Matariki as a time to celebrate and prepare for the indigenous New Year.

In class we learnt about Matariki through a range of activities including Maths, Reading Journal Articles, Myths and Art, and Room 9 had a planting day.

The Matariki celebrations were concluded with a fabulous Hangi. Thanks to all our volunteers who helped it be a huge success!

Tirimoana Soccer Exchange

With the Soccer Field Day being cancelled we decided to challenge Tirimoana thinking that we would have been the top two schools on the day. Unfortunately Mr Bainbridge mucked up the draw so the two A teams ended up playing the two B teams. Therefore a re-match was held last week. The A team drew 1-1, Player of the Day: Sean Duggan and the B Team won 3-1, Player of the Day: Zach Vince.

Interschool Basketball Day

The Matipo basketball team attended the Te Atatu Interschool Basketball Day at the Trusts Stadium. The team of nine year 6 children played teams from schools around the Te Atatu area. The team won all of their games and won the B grade competition overall.

18-4 vs Freyberg

18-3 vs Edmonton

24-4 vs Rutherford

12-10 vs Flanshaw

Top goal scorer was Goldberg with a whopping 20 goals overall and player of the day was Vanessa. Well done team!Thanks to Mr and Mrs Kennerley for their assistance in taking the team on the day and to Kieren Bainbridge for coaching the team and being released from work by the Software of Excellence Community Service Programme.

Intermediate Visit

Today the Year 6’s visited Te Atatu Intermediate. It was an opportunity for the children to spend some time in the Technology Rooms. The children were divided into 6 groups and went to a Tech Room to either do Science, Visual Arts, Workshop, Soft Materials, Hard Materials and Food Technology. They thoroughly enjoyed their visit!
