Latin Percussion Band

Each Friday one of our parents, James Hughes plus a friend come to school to teach Latin percussion drumming.

James is a professional musician who plays in a well known 12 piece band called the Batucada Sound Machine.

James brings most of the drums and provides a very exciting opportunity for these children involved.

You can buy Batucada Sound Machine music online via Amplifier.co.nz or iTunes. Also, their single “He Said She Said” is up for a Juice TV award in the “Best Roots Video” category, so go along to the Juice TV site and vote for them!

Board of Trustees Election Results

Eleven candidates stood for the BOT triennial election. Any of the candidates would have made a positive and skilled contribution to the Board. There was a pleasingly high voter response.

The official count is;

Vanna Blucher = 106 votes
Julie Dobbie = 94 votes
Kate Eldridge = 97 votes
Lynn Holland = 32 votes
Amy Huizing = 29 votes
Donna Kopa = 96 votes
Jolyon Ludbrook = 55 votes
Amanda Magnus = 123 votes
Martyn Nicholls = 149 votes
Walter Payne = 150 votes
Faga Siaki = 113 votes

The six successful candidates are:

Vana Blucher, Kate Eldridge, Amanda Magnus, Martyn Nicholls, Walter Payne and Faga Siaki.

Thank you to all the eleven candidates who stood and to the majority of our parents who voted.

Social Networking Websites

Sites such as Bebo, Facebook , Hi5, etc are useful social networking and collaborative sites for adults. However, there are real dangers involved. Most have an age restriction – usually R14 years but this is easily got around.

Almost every week there is a news item or T.V. show highlighting the dangers of predatory people – usually older men, grooming young girls for wrongful intent. They create their own online personas to lure girls into eventually meeting up with them.

The Sunday Star Times of 9th May carried a two page article about an older man who lured 15 young Indian girls by a false identity on the Internet, got them to send him candid photos of themselves, then blackmailed them with exposure to their parents. He was convicted of raping 15 of them but it is believed there were probably twice this number. (One of the girls attempted suicide).

I urge all parents to use their common sense, don’t let young children have Facebook accounts and monitor their computer usage.

New Construction

Russell Irwine has been very hard at work organising for construction of a flying fox and a climbing tower. The previous flying fox poles were not strong enough so have had to be replaced.

We also got the poles put in for the new climbing tower, but this wont be finished until next year due to budget constraints. It just worked out cheaper to have the hole boring and concrete pouring done all at once.

In the meantime, these four poles will be a new sculpture called “The Four Pillars of Wisdom”!

Thanks Russell for all your hard work.

Te Atatu Intermediate Kapahaka Visit

The Te Atatu Intermediate kapahaka group came to our school to give us a fantastic performance. It was great to see many ex-Matipo Children amongst the group.

Dylan Elise Visit

On Monday Dylan Elise returned to our school for his drumming show. He showcased once again his many drumming skills and made the children and teachers join in too!
